What is Football Refugees?
First there was onefootball.com
The fans forum was started up on that site as a test case. Editors loved it and so did the visitors to the site. The forum popularity was such that more and more of the sites resources had to be devoted to it in order to keep it running. Onefootball ran into financial trouble as the 'dot.com bubble burst' and people realised having a domain and a website didn't make you a millionaire. Unless you sold it off before it became a financial burden.
The goods and chattels of the site were bought up by a well known brand name which then ran it. It ran well for a while, the forum continuing to grow and being moderated behind the scenes. Friendships blossomed in the forum between people from around the globe who shared a love of football.
But then onefootball.com was cut loose from the parent company and closed down for 'financial' reasons. Forum members were without a home and many without a job and payment for work done.
Word was spread on the dead onefootball site that the forum was alive and kicking in its new home, and people trickled through. In July 2002, soon after starting the site (many thanks to Bubby & Myles for setting it up) and it becoming popular with the regulars from the old site, a poll was run to decide the new name, thus, the name footballrefugees.com was born. After a few good years URL footballrefugees.com has ceased to exist and Football Refugees have moved to a new home at footballrefugees.freephpnuke.org on 10.10.2006.
It was, and still is, our intention to run this as a non-profit, democratic site purely for people with a common interest in football. People are free to come and go, as long as everyone is treated with respect.
