The 40-year-old goal-poacher was mobbed by schoolchildren and autograph hunters when he arrived today at Adelaide Airport, where he was welcomed by samba dancers and Brazilian drummers.
A member of Brazil's victorious 1994 World Cup team, Romario will play his first game for Adelaide on November 25.
The striker will also play for his US second-tier team Miami FC against Adelaide United in a friendly here Tuesday.
"I'm going to score plenty of goals. I come here to score goals - I don't know how many," Romario told reporters.
Romario has, according to his own calculations, scored 984 career goals and would like to break the 1000-goal barrier before possible retirement next year.
The former world footballer of the year said he was honoured to be considered an ambassador for soccer.
At the peak of his career, Romario played for Spanish giants Barcelona and Valencia and Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.
Romario's first A-League match will be away to Central Coast Mariners on November 25 before a run of three home games.
